This week in week 7 of the course EDCI 337 we learned the bases of storytelling. The process of telling a story and what makes a good story. For this process, you wanna have a good basis and framework for your narrative.
You wanna start by having a framework and outline for the story, some of this includes knowing your audience, knowing the age range to tell the story, if the background is appropriate to your audience, age range, and topic range. You want to engage your audience, so you would not approach a subject that does not excite your audience and something that would not engage them in a discussion. A good idea would be to tell a personal story. An experience you have had, or a learning moment you have experienced, is something that gets the audience to know more about you.
Show your audience your story, bring pictures or items/souvenirs to show audiences your experience. If showing a presentation for a class present a slide and know your material. A good way to do this is to practice the slide or video you are presenting to get the main points across. Show an educational video, or infographic as we have talked about before in a previous blog post.
I think I would rate my storytelling skills at a very high scale because of all the work I have done with kids as a summer camp leader or running a Dungeon and Dragons campaign, in which you have to practice telling a roleplay story for characters to interact with.
As I said earlier when talking about educational videos or information presentations to have practice and maybe even record and have a backup file for future uses, I find the most resourceful educational videos is one that captures your audience’s attention. Again knowing your audience beforehand, looking at some of the educational videos posted in our lessons in EDCI 337 have not always grabbed my attention or I didn’t understand the information presented. The reason being some of the information presented was presented in a way where it was just a podcast and nothing to watch. This way of presented can be effective but I found for those who have learning disabilities such as myself I felt less keen on listening and distracted by other items on the screen.
Here I present my screencast / educational video I have done in the past for my English classes.

Hi,
Thanks for the blog post and for sharing your thoughts.
You have explained the storytelling concept very well.
It seems like you have prior experience therefore, I would like to ask you what is the impact of voice tone regarding the audience for our storytelling. Do we need to consider that as well during our voice recording?
Looking forward to your feedback.
Thanks,
Anum

Hi, Gabi.
Thank you for sharing your experience and thoughts based on storytelling. Although I have not read the week’s seventh blog post (due to my mid-terms), I think I now have a good understanding of good storytelling. I agree with your point that some of the videos from our instructor are not fully motivating (mostly because it’s not created by her). Furthermore, it is indeed significant to approach creating videos based on the viewer’s age. Kids would definitely hate long lecture-type videos.
Looking forward to your future posts!

Hi Gabi!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and video you created!
I think story telling is such a great method to touch the audience (students’) heart and help make the content meaningful and lasting.
I think you have a great narration going on – the tone of voice, speed, and volume especially are very clear and easy to listen to! Maybe now that we have learned about the tips and tricks to making good infographics and presentations, you can maybe try to cut down some words to make it even less wordy and sharper! 🙂

Hi Gabi,
Thank you for sharing these thoughts, and your video is really interesting and clear! You are really good at telling a story, I’m really bad at that because It’s hard for me to share my emotion through my narration. I used to play DND a lot, have you heard about COC trpg? That was cool too.

Hello Gabi,
Thank you for sharing your screencasting. I also love watching japanese animation. Also your opinion of story telling that should be started with a frame. I agree with you because a good frame can make a story much more clear.
